Update

So... I've been out of the blogging loop for a while and that's due to a few things but mainly that I'm having another burn-out episode ("a dip") so I'm exhausted most of the time and I haven't had much energy left for sewing, and none for taking photos and blogging. The other big thing is that my dad is terminally ill and I've spent a lot of my free time driving to see him in the hospital (he lives three hours away by car).

So two major bummers (don't think I take my dad's condotion lightly just because I call it a bummer)... but I have a good thing going on as well and that's my family's first vacation together abroad! I, my husband and my kids are going to Tenerife for a week next Friday!!! Yay!

Anyway, now my head is in packing mode and trying to figure out what to bring for a beach vacation...

I have done some sewing this last month and today I finally scraped together some energy to take photos, so now you can expect some posts and FOs! Finally.... :)

Our hotel in Tenerife! Looks grand, doesn't it?!

A ton of bricks

Sorry for not posting in such a long time, but I've started work again after the vacation and it kind of hit me like a ton of bricks. I've been totally knackered each day after work and have only had the energy for the most necessary stuff, like cooking dinner.

I haven't been sewing, obviously, but I did get an order for a giraffe dress from one of friends. She wants a pink one and I've already bought the fabric and cut it, now I only have to sew it up, which I will do this weekend.

Well, I promise to try to be back soon with an FO that I've talked about before.

Bye for now,

Johanna

Eurovision song contest

Currently watching the Eurovision song contest and I can't believe how few points Sweden are getting!

Besides Sweden, my favourite is Hungary, such a cool song!

Are you, or have you been, watching the Eurovision song contest?

Planning for a comfy garden

For a while, well the last few summers, I've been wanting to improve our conservatory (glass terrace?) Don't know what word to use, but I'll stick with conservatory). The glass of the conservatory is really old and becoming more and more fragile, not a good thing when you have 6-year-old playing football nearby.

We have a sliding door to open the conservatory towards the wooden deck in our garden, which is good, BUT the sliding door is located behind the door that leads into the house when open. What were the people who built the conservatory thinking?! So what I want to do and Mr Red and I have agreed to do is to replace all the windows in the front with sliding windows and the windows and sliding door on the left will be replaced with a whole wall of sliding doors. We will also replace the plastic roof with a thicker plastic roof.

But of course I don't only want to change the strucrute of the conservatory but also the interior, so this morning my son and I went to IKEA to buy new garden furniture! :) Yay!

I'm very happy with our purchase and I can't wait to be able to use the furniture! We still have loads of snow left so I guess it will still be a while. At least I could put some of the old chairs outside in the sun. The weather has actually been great yesterday and today and yesterday I was able to sit in the sun for a while for the first time this year. SO NICE!!!

I have done some sewing this weekend too, but the result will have to wait because it's not quite finished and it's not for me! :) More unselfish sewing that is!

Hope you're having as good a weekend as me, it can't get better than sewing, shopping and sitting in the sun, am I right?!

February - the suckiest month of the year?

Warning! I'm going to whine a lot about the state of things which is pretty bad...

I have come to the conclusion that February is the suckiest (as in worst) month of the year. Why is that? Well, there's only illnesses and bad weather which leads to no energy.

Ok, let me whine about the illnesses for a bit now.... Right now both  kids have the flu, not the stomach flu (Thank God!), Big Red (my son 6 years old) got sick last Saturday while visiting my sister and her family, fever, headache and puking (because of the fever and too much candy). Then fever, higher fever and some more fever... Yay! Not... :( On wednesday, Little Red (my daughter almost 4) woke up with a high fever too and have barely eaten for the last two days, which isn't a good thing when you only weigh 13 kilos (that's like a big one year old). Before this Little Red had Tonsillitus - again, and had to eat antibiotics - again... So now I haven't slept propeerly for about three weeks - again....

Last February, I went on sick leave because of depression casued by exhaustion and my husband had his stroke. Februrary isn't a good month...

Ok, now on to the weather! The last days of January actually showed some promise, the snow was almost gone, the roads were dry, the temperature was even around 0* C. The sun was also out for two days straight. It almost felt like spring was coming. :) But, oh, how wrong I was. Now we have loads of snow again, with no prospect of warmth to melt it away. It's really windy outside and it's even snowing some more...ARGH!!! (Did I mention that very much don't like the winter?!)

Not my photo, but this is pretty much what it looks like here...

The weather might be ok to deal with, you can always stay indoors, but because of all the illnesses (yep, I also had a bout of the flu) and the lack of sleep, I just don't have the energy to do anything. And by "anything" I mean sewing.... Or taking photos of finished garments and blogging about them....

I have made a pair of trousers that I like from Burdastyle, I have even used them, but I will have to tell you about them another time. At least I can show you the pattern, because that's a photo I don't have to take myself... :)

Well, I'm sorry for all the whining and I'll try to be back soon with some more interesting posts. I do have a lot of plans which I hope will be realised and shown here.

Visit at my sister's

We, me and the kids, are currently visiting one of my sisters and her family. My sister has af great sense of style when it comes to home decorating (well, otherwise too :)) and I just have to post some photos from her house.

Sewing room addition

Ever since I moved my sewing space downstairs to the guest bedroom I've been seeing some sort of notice board on the wall to the left of my sewing machine. I knew exactly which fabric to use for the cover, a super cute sewing themed Tilda-fabric from Panduro called Sewingbird labels.

Yesterday, I went into town with the kids and decided to finally get some that fabulous fabric. Lucky me!!! It was on sale!!! Half off, so I treated myself to a whole metre. :)

Isn't the fabric adorable?

It wasn't the first notice board I've made so it took about 15 minutes to cover the board, put the pins and clips on it and put it on the wall.

I think the fabric is gorgeous and I wouldn't mind having it all over the walls in my sewing room. :)

Sewing-wise, I'm waiting for the Tiramisu dress pattern from Cake patterns. I will participate in the Tiramisu 30 minutes a day-sewalong which starts on January 8th. I hope I get my pattern by then. Well, I already have the fabric so all I have to get for the sewalong are the notions.

And yet again, please take part in my 5000 pageviews giveaway!

Until next time,

Johanna

2012 in short

It seems popular in the sewing blogosphere to summarize the past year, and I thought to myself: Why not?! 2012 was a half bad/half good year, or more like really bad and then some better... Let me tell you...

2012
(Background: in 2011 I lost all my hair to Alopecia Universalis (caused by stress), which didn't feel so hot...)
January - Started out with the end of a good Christmas holiday, I felt no urge whatsoever to go back to work. And I hardly did, because most of January I was at home because of stress...

February - Finally got a doctor's appointment, where the excellent doctor put me on sick leave because of depression caused by exhaustion ("burn-out"). I was home for three (!) days before my daughter got chickenpox and was home from daycare for ten days. Then I was home for two (!) days before my husband got a stroke (yep, stroke as in bleeding in the brain). The same day he was hospitalised our son got chickenpox, which meant we couldn't go visit my husband in the hospital. I struggled to find people to help me watch the kids while I went to my husband in the hospital (we don't have any relatives close-by).

March - My husband came home from the hospital and was miraculously unmarked by the stroke. We were now both on sick leave, which was both good and bad; good because we got time to spend with each other which never have, bad because I needed rest and silence.

April - I started sewing again, hadn't sewn since before I got the kids which was six years ago. I felt really good and I found sewing blogs on the net to inspire me. I never thought I would have a sewing blog of my own, but after only a few weeks of sewing I started one. And how rewarding! Really one of the good things this year.

May - I try to go back to work but it doesn't work out. I knew it was too soon but wanted to please my boss and the Social security office (which gives you money when you're sick. Bless the Swedish social security system!).

June - My husband starts working part-time after his stroke and it works out well and I (finally) get some peace and quiet around the house. :)

July - We have our summer holiday, four weeks together. One week is spent at our favourite summer spot, Olofsbo outside of Falkenberg. Sadly, this week is kind of a fiasco, bad weather, the kids are understimulated and my husband and I are exhausted. There's no place like home...

August - All summer I have been preparing in my head to go back to work when school starts again and I do! I start with 25% and it goes great. It's good to feel better!

September - I finish the stress management course I've been attending since June and I feel that it has helped me.

October - Work is going so well, that I "upgrade" to 50%. My pupils are so great and I get a lot of energy from them. Sewing and blogging take the backseat while I concentrate on work, fewer projects and fewer posts, but it feels OK. Decided to get a kitten, such joy! But I didn't get to fetch it until Dec.

November - Everything was really good and we were all looking forward to going to my sister and her family and to see their new house. Of course our daughter got tonsillitis while we're there and on Saturday evening she woke up screaming in panic for air her tonsils were so swollen. My sister and I took her to the children emergeny room where we spent three hours waiting. We got great help, but it's always nerve-wrecking to wait. Because of her tonsillitis I didn't get much sleep at all for about five nights in a row and I literally became a zombie (because of my burn-out...).

December - One of the most nerve-wrecking periods of the year at my job, with grading and everything, but this year it went really smoothly and I felt OK, even though my body told me otherwise with eczema and trouble sleeping. I made myself a cosy velour dress for Christmas and I posted about it with pictures where I show my naked head, for the first time on the blog. For me that's a HUGE step.

Ok, there it is, my 2012. Very bad, but good too...

My hopes for 2013:
  • I recover fully from my health issues.
  • (Though I know there's not much of a chance) I hope I get my hair back.
  • I keep on sewing for myself, pretty things that go with my style.
  • I feel good about sewing for others (kids' t-shirts and so on) and maybe can make some profit of it.
  • My family stay healthy.
  • My class and I will have a good trip to Mallorca.
  • I will keep staying away from sugar as much as I can (I do feel better without it).
  • Loads of other things I can't remember now.. :)
Happy New Year everyone!! (And don't forget to enter my giveaway!)

Happy Trash-mas

Well, one of the definite downsides to Christmas is all the garbage you end up with, and I don't mean crappy present, but the packagings that hold toys and other things...

I foresee a trip to the recycling centre in my near future... Most certainly since our laundry room looks like this at the moment....

Can you believe there were only five of us yesterday opening presents...?!

A visitor

Yesterday I had a visit from my aunt, who's only twelve years older than me and more of a friend. She's is a faithful reader of my blogs and couldn't wait to see some of the things from my blog IRL (like the kitchen island re-make). While we chatted away she asked me if I hadn't done any sewing in a while since the blog had been so quiet, but I have!

I showed her two dresses from Ottobre, one Onion dress, a pair of trousers from Onion and four X-mas themed sofa cushions. I forgot to show her the Ottobre skirt. So I have been doing a lot of sewing, but just haven't had time to take decent photos or blog about them. On Friday my Christmas vacation begins and after that I will definately have time for photos and blogging. I can also promise you that the photos will be A LOT better since I got a new camera as an early Christmas present!!

Ok, so I'll be back soon with loads of great photos of stuff I've made. I also would like to send loads of hugs to my aunt who celebrates her 50th birthday tomorrow, congrats!!

Stuff...

I've finally done some actual sewing  today. I write this because it seems I haven't sewn much lately. But I did get some new fabric and patterns.

But first, sewing... Today I completed a muslin for the Ottobre dress I've written about before, it's "the Stitch details dress".

source: ottobre design
I haven't taken any photos yet of my dress, but hold on, they'll get here... It's a wearable muslin, but I'm not extatic about it. I'm thinking of making it up in some jersey fabric next.

A while ago I actually made a muslin for the skirt I've mentioned from Ottobre, but I never got round to blogging about it. It's "the Aztec skirt", but as with the dress, I'm not totally happy with it.

source: as above

Ok, now to my new fabric. I got six different fabrics two weeks ago when visiting my sister. One lovely smooth wool fabric, which I pretty much ruined while pre-washing, not so smooth anymore as felted.... Two dark trouser fabrics, three different kinds of dark blue jersey fabric (I know... but there weren't any other colours and blue suits me...). I also celebrated my pay raise by buying even more jersey fabrics, three different kinds, each more than 3 metres.

I have also ordered two new patterns, from Onion this time.

I hope the patternsland in my mailbox tomorrow! I have already fabrics lined up for both of them! Yay!

Exciting non-sewing related news...

I just want to jump up and down and clap my hands about this. But you have to step over to my other blog to read the news, since it's not sewing related.

Good night,

Necklace

The other day I felt like having a new necklace. I have one where I like the length a lot. I have a whole big tin of pearls and stuff to make jewellery so I made one while watching TV. I especially like the big pendant.

The colours are a bit bright and summery maybe, but I like them anyhow.

BRB with my next post.

Labels in place

Here are two examples of my new labels in place on the garments. I can't decide on just one position so I'm alternating between these two.

Vertical position

Horizontal posistion

Horizontal close-up
BTW, I just LOVE Project Runway. There are re-runs of the older shows every day at lunch, and it's inspiring. The latest season is shown on Tuesdays with double episodes everytime! Yay!

Labels and Macaron

In the mail today I got, not one, but TWO surprises! Well, not very surprising since I was totally aware of ordering them, but anyway, it made me real happy when they showed up today:

My labels!

and

My Macaron pattern from Colette patterns!

So, now I'm ready to face the Colette sew-along, I'll buy fabric next week (or decide in the weekend if I'll use something from my stash), and trace the pattern pieces this week.

The labels were great! I have sewn them on the kids T-shirts, two of my blouses and the graduation dress. I have to do the rest tomorrow and I'll snap a picture toworrow and show you. It looks totally professional! *proud*

Labels

Last night I was up quite late and surfed the net. After a while I thought I'd check out the options available for making your own clothes labels. I found this site where you can order labels with your name on them (and loads of other labels).

The prices were reasonable, so I ordered some (100 pieces, the least amount possible) and they will look like this:

I'm happy with it, but there weren't many fonts to choose from, which was a bit negative. The colour selection was ok, I chose a grey background and white text. I would have liked a pink background (pink is one of my favourite colours), but I think the text would barely be visible, so instead I went with the grey.

The labels will be here in 7-14 days!

I also started on the kids' t-shirts yesterday, I'm almost finished with one of them and will get started on the second one today probably. Very easy and quick to sew on the overlocker....

Johanna

Too much...

Yes, it has actually been too much lately... Too much of a lot of things, good things even, but I get really tired from that too. This week, we've been to Orust to visit my sister and her family and then we got a visit from my husband's brother and his family, and it's only Friday. All this visting is really fun, but I get really tired from being around people all the time. So I haven't had the energy (or the time) to get going on a new sewing project, not even to use my new overlocker! Or blog about the fabrics I got while visiting Orust (some seriously cute knit fabrics for me - and the kids!).

Now we don't have any plans for a week, which feels really good. So I hope I can gather some energy and use my new overlocker and make some t-shirts from my new fabrics and get going on the dress from my last post.

Off to bed now, to get some sleep=energy... :)

Present time

Yesterday (exactly two weeks before my actual birthday) I got my birthday present, my new overlocker! I can't believe how fast it got here, didn't I order it on Thursday and yesterday was Tuesday? That's only 3 working days, because I ordered it in the afternoon!

So, here's what I ordered: The Brother 1034D overlocker, four cones of cream thread and four cones of black thread. All this for £209! P&P was free!

BUT, take a look at this... This is what I got for free!!!!!!

TEN cones of thread, five pairs of scissors, two boxes of sewing machine needles, measuring tape, a seam ripper AND a power adapter (the machine has a UK power plug).

I totally recommend Sewing machines direct. What a great webshop!

Now I only have to figure out my next project so I can start using my new machine!

Cheating...

During my last project, the tent dress, I started thinking about what Katy said about my sewing in one of her comments:
Katy47p July 13, 2012 10:19 AM
"Oh wow, you are so quick at sewing, I can't wait to see what you create with your new overlocker. xx"

Hmm, am I quick at sewing? Maybe I am. But why is that? And that's what I was thinking about. This is what I came up with:
  • I usually don't pick very difficult patterns=easy and quick to sew
  • I CHEAT!
Yep, that's right, I cheat. At certain things, not everything. For example, I want the inside of my garments to look neat, so I use French seams as much as I can, that's not cheating. So what do I cheat with?
Take a look at the picture below... Yes, I have not sewed the bias tape together before attaching it to the neckline. I just hate doing that, so unnecessary...

I also don't measure when pressing the seam allowance before hemming. I use my eyes and wing it. It turns out good enough for me...

When I made these pleats on the sleeves of the tent dress, I didn't measure properly, I used the dots in the fabric.

And I also DIDN'T PIN! Nope, I try to use pins as little as possible... It's just tiresome to pin and pin and pin.... When I do French seams, I only pin the first seam, then I press it and just sew the second seam.

Well, am I the only one doing this, or is there anyone else who also cheats when sewing? What tips or tricks do you use when sewing?

Bye for now,

Johanna
